Sunday 9th June – walk **** Alresford to Wivenhoe - sunny and warm:)
Went to bed at 10.45 in our little VW campervan at Alresford Church with
the sound of music from a ‘do’ in Alresford, then we had a 15-minute
firework display. We couldn’t see them but we could certainly hear them.
At 11 o clock sharp it ended and we had a peaceful night by the derelict
church which burnt down in the 70’s - surrounded by wheat fields with
poppy margins:) The dog walkers didn’t even arrive until at least nine
and we woke to a calm, sunny morning with Storm Miguel long gone! Lovely
relaxing start to the day enjoying the scenery and reading. Then at 10
after breakfast eaten outside, we set off on a walk. Starting through the
churchyard, with the old grave stones surrounded by Dog Daisies, through
the wheat fields and up to the old quarry fishing pits. Turning right
towards the River Colne passing loads of stunning pink, spiked, flowers
which we looked up and discovered they are called Onobrychis:) Passing
several really old oaks you come out on the river path which we have biked
from Colchester to Brightlingsea and being a Sunday, it was fairly busy
with walkers and cyclists. The tide was low there was loads of mud but
very few birds. Then you go through a gate to be greeted by loads of cows
and calves grazing on the path which made Mag a bit nervous. Safely through
the livestock we made it to the quaint little town of Wivenhoe with its mix
of traditional cottages and tasteful new build. We make it to the end of
the riverside prom before turning and heading back. Back at the cows we
turned left away from the river slowly walking uphill past the cows and
then some sheep, coming out by the quarry road. A footpath runs alongside
which takes us back to the pits and finally up to the church and van. We
were out 2hours 30 minutes covering 5 miles and were much in need of our
salad lunch. Relaxing hour in the sun before driving over to Wrabness to
pick up my wind meter which I left there the last time I windsurfed on the
Stour. As we had my windsurfing trailer, we parked at the nature reserve
carpark and walked to the small beach and found it after a bit of
searching. With a nice offshore breeze, the river was really flat and
looked perfect for foiling! Then home after another top weekend:)
